Pricing member, non-member and firm rates on a CLE course
Reviewed: 2026-08-09
A member rate on bindro is verified, not declared: the membership number is checked against your own roster inside the money transaction, and a lapsed or revoked reference is refused rather than quietly charged the full price. Only a digest of each number is stored, so nobody — including your own staff — can read one back. Firm block bookings are priced separately, by a published group rate.
Why not just add a member discount code?
Because a code is a rumour. It gets forwarded, posted in a firm's internal chat and used by people who let their membership lapse two years ago, and you find out when you reconcile the revenue against your roster and the numbers do not meet.
A verified member rate closes that. The attorney enters their membership number, and bindro checks it against the roster you maintain — at the moment of the sale, inside the same transaction that takes the money, so there is no window in which a stale check can be used.
A member on a seat type that has no member rate simply pays the published price. They are not refused; the discount just does not exist on that seat.
What happens when a membership has lapsed?
The registration is refused with a message against the membership field, naming the problem, and no order is created. The attorney is told at the point of registration rather than being charged the wrong amount and having it corrected by email a week later.
The same applies to a revoked membership and to a number that is simply not on your roster. All three produce a clear refusal on the field rather than a silent fallback to the full price, because a silent fallback is how an attorney ends up surprised by their own receipt.
Your roster carries expiry and revocation, so keeping it current is the whole administrative job here.
Can staff see an attorney's membership number?
No, and this is deliberate. A membership reference unlocks a cheaper price, which makes it a bearer secret: bindro stores only a one-way digest of it, so the console cannot display one back to anybody, including you.
The roster page shows what an administrator actually needs — the member's name and whether their membership is current, lapsed or revoked — which is enough to answer a billing query without holding a credential you did not need to keep.
The bar number is a separate matter. That is a registration answer identifying the attorney for credit purposes, and it is not a price mechanism.
When is a group rate the better tool than a member rate?
When a firm is buying seats in bulk rather than an individual claiming a membership. Publish a group rate on the seat type with a minimum quantity, and a booking at or above that threshold takes the group price automatically, with the order line recording why it was cheaper.
Below the threshold the buyer pays the published price, so there is no negotiation and no manual override to remember. The two mechanisms compose: a bar association can run a verified member rate for individuals and a group rate for firms booking a table, and each order records which basis priced it.
Every price is derived on the server from what you published. Nothing a browser sends decides what an attorney is charged.
- Individual attorneys with a membership → verified member rate.
- Firms buying a block → published group rate with a minimum quantity.
- Firms that also need to pay on a purchase order → both, on the same order.
- Early-bird and tiered pricing sit on top of either.
What should I take away?
- Member rates are verified against your roster, not claimed on the honour system.
- Lapsed and revoked references are refused on the field — never silently full-priced.
- Only a digest of a membership number is stored; the console cannot read one back.
- Group rates handle firm block bookings and record the basis on the order line.
- All pricing is server-derived; the browser never decides what is charged.
